Police Dispatcher / Call Taker
Description
Under general supervision performs skilled work in receiving calls at the Communications Center, including requests for police, fire and medical aid services or to provide information.
Dispatches personnel and equipment for emergency service by telephone, radio, computer-aided dispatch system and other communications equipment.
Disposition of calls is done in accordance with established procedures; however, an employee of this class must be knowledgeable of local government operations, and police, fire, and medical aid systems, and the geographical layout of the city. Performs related work as assigned.
Essential Duties:
- Operates telephone, radio, computer-aided dispatch system, 911 telephone system and other communications equipment.
- Receives emergency calls which must be properly processed, including the dispatching of personnel and equipment to scenes of fire, police incidents, accidents, rescue operations, and other emergencies.
- Receives routine calls and gives information as requested;
- Prioritizes calls in order to determine dispatch order and law enforcement personnel required in accordance with policy and procedure.
- Makes inquiries into and receives messages from County, State, and Federal computer databases through the operation of computer terminals.
- Receives and transmits messages between field units, receives and transmits messages through the computer-aided dispatch system, including police messages locally and nationwide.
- Prepares and maintains radio, phone, and other log records.

- Education: Have a US High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- Experience: One (1) year of work experience equivalent to that gained as a Police Call Taker with the City of Bakersfield, OR An equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the capabilities to perform the described duties.
- Skill: Ability to type 40 words per minute.
- License: Possess a valid “Class C” California Driver’s License

Police Services Technician
Description
Under general supervision as an unarmed, non-sworn employee, performs work of average difficulty involving specific phases of police work on an assigned shift and performs other work as required.
The Police Service Technician position plays a vital role in the department by investigating both criminal and non-criminal reports, as well as handling traffic accidents and various hazards.
Duties:
- Some of the duties of this position
Conducts certain types of criminal and traffic investigations - Assists sworn personnel in follow-up investigations of assigned cases, both in-house and in the field
- Enforces parking laws, ordinances, and regulations and issues citations
- Directs traffic at accident, crime, and fire scenes and special events
- Prepares and completes a variety of investigative and incident reports

Clerk Typist
Description
The Clerk Typist position in the Records Division provides crucial assistance to the public, officers, and the rest of the department and is often referred to as the “back bone” of the organization. The 24-Hour unit is the hub of the Records Division and is a critical 24-hour, seven-days a week clerical support role of the Bakersfield Police Department providing records and information only accessible by authorized staff within the unit. The 24-Hour unit completes majority of the organizations internal data entry records and records entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC). The 24-Hour unit is also responsible for routing and responding to incoming teletype messages within timely manner.
Duties:
- Enter, modify, locate, and/or clear stolen vehicles, stolen license plates, stolen guns, stolen property, missing persons, impounds, warrants, and protective orders.
- Query law enforcement computer systems for criminal history, warrant information, Department of Motor Vehicle information.
- Enter arrest data utilizing law enforcement computer systems.
- Transcribe reports utilizing law enforcement computer systems.
- Confirm local and out of jurisdiction warrants via teletype and by telephone.
